The contraceptive implant has a number of advantages when compared to other contraceptives, including:
- The implant can be used by women who cannot take the hormone oestrogen (for example women who are smokers and are over 35 years old, or women with a history of blood clots). This is because the implant uses a different type of hormone (a progestogen) to stop ovulation.
- Periods with an implant are usually lighter. It is also common for periods to stop altogether after the implant has been in place for over a year.
- You can get the implant and then forget all about it until it's time to get it replaced. It also doesn't interrupt sex.
- If you're planning to get pregnant, fertility returns quickly after the implant is removed.
