You will continue to bleed lightly for one to three weeks after the abortion, but times may vary.
The heaviest bleeding typically occurs 2-5 hours after using Misoprostol (the second abortion pill) and usually slows down within 24 hours. Bleeding and cramping usually slow down after the pregnancy sac comes out, which is usually seen as a white and fluffy sac surrounded by brown-red tissue. Most women pass the pregnancy sac within 4 hours of taking Misoprostol. You can use Ibuprofen as a painkiller during the abortion.
If you bleed too much, for example you fill more than two maxi pads an hour for more than two hours, you should go for a check-up in hospital.
It is normal for the bleeding to slow or stop for a few days and then start again. Some women continue to have cramps and bleeding for around three weeks.
Your normal menstrual period usually returns after four to six weeks, however you can become pregnant again almost immediately after an abortion, so consider starting contraception as soon as possible.
