Misoprostol tablets can either be placed under the tongue for thirty minutes, or placed in the vagina. Both routes of administration are effective. The vaginal route may be more convenient for some women if they are experiencing nausea and vomiting during the abortion. It is recommended to moisten the Misoprostol tablets with water before placing them in the vagina.
However, the main risk with the vaginal route is that if you need to seek medical help after the abortion, the doctors could find pill residue in the vagina and may become suspicious. To avoid this you can remove any residue of the pills from your vagina using your finger before going to hospital, or avoid the vaginal route altogether and take the tablets sublingually (under the tongue).
