A typical abortion pill pack will contain at least 8 tablets of Misoprostol. These are either tablets marked "B" in a combi-pack, or are tablets called Cytotec or Cytotecal.
For pregnancies up to 9 weeks gestation, research shows that taking 1 tablet of Mifepristone (200 mg) and 4 tablets of Misoprostol (200 mcg each) under the tongue 24 hours later, is a safe and effective way to have an abortion, and the abortion will be successful in the vast majority of cases.
Recent research on telemedical abortion, however, also indicates that even in early pregnancies of less than 9 weeks, an extra dose of 2 Misoprostol, used 3 to 4 hours after the first dose results in less ongoing pregnancies and less incomplete abortions. This is particularly important in countries where abortion is illegal, such as Malta, because if the abortion with pills is unsuccessful it is not easy to opt for a surgical abortion afterwards.
For pregnancies of more than 9 weeks, extra doses of Misoprostol after the first four tablets should always be taken.
If you have received Misoprostol tablets with a dose of 400mcg each, the number of tablets mentioned above should be halved.
